Trenton officials are angry that the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General hasn't been responsive to their requests for more information about a shooting by police officers that left a 14-year-old-boy in the hospital. The boy, Radazz Hearns, was shot 7 times.
Officials say Hearns took off running after he and two other teens were approached by police amid reports of gunfire in the area. The Attorney General's office says witnesses told authorities Hearns reached for his waistband. A loaded gun was found near the scene 12 hours later. Hearns's family says he was unarmed.
Reporter Kevin Shea from NJ Advance Media told WNYC's David Furst that local authorities aren't releasing much information because they say they want to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
"The state Attorney General's office is investigating this with what's called their Shooting Response Team when an officer's involved. And they have said they're not going to put out a lot of information because they want to keep this investigation under their guidelines," Shea said.
Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey has called for a federal investigation.
